Guttering refers to the half-open pipes fitted to the edge of roofs. 

Gutters are usually fitted to the fascia boards.

Their task is to catch rainwater that runs off the roof and filter it into a gutter.  This is an essential and important part of the roofing system. Gutters prevent water damage to the roof space, brick work and the ground surface below and the fascias and soffits.

Good guttering can be the difference between a little surface moisture and a lot of annoying puddles.

The depth of the gutter depends on the size of the roof, as larger roofs produce more run off.
